Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Research fellowships for scholars from P.R. China at the Needham Research Institute, Cambridge, UK

PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT TO APPROPRIATE RECIPIENTS

The Needham Research Institute (NRI), home of the Science and Civilisation in China project provides scholars with excellent facilities for research into the history of science, technology and medicine in East Asia.

Funds granted by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation make it possible for the NRI to offer fellowships for scholars working within the broad field of the history of science, technology and medicine in East Asia

Applications must include CV and a description of the work that will be done during the period of the fellowship, together with two letters of recommendation from qualified persons.  The project description should indicate why it would be particularly helpful for the researcher to be able to work at the NRI.

For those wishing to apply for a six-month fellowship commencing in October 2009 or January 2010 the deadline is Friday 29th May 2009.

The fellowship will meet the costs of return economy air travel to the UK, together with a grant adequate to cover living costs in Cambridge for six months.  In addition there will be some support for research expenses and travel for research purposes within the UK.

The successful applicant is likely to be a postgraduate student or post-doctoral by a few years.  They will have a level of spoken and written English that will enable them to interact with scholars in Cambridge from their arrival, since they will be expected to take an active part in the scholarly community at the NRI and participate not only in the regular weekly seminars and occasional workshops held at the Institute, but also attend seminars relevant to their subject which are held in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science and elsewhere in the University of Cambridge.  It is expected that they will use part of their time in Cambridge on work intended for publication in a refereed Western-language academic journal.
