Prices, wages, and transport costs in the Qianlong reign
       Update Time: 2009-09-24 Print      Text Size: A A A

Preface

These databases of prices, wages, and transport costs in public construction in Gansu province in the Qianlong reign have been set up in cooperation of the Seminar für Sinologie und Koreanistik, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany, and the Institute for History of Natural Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. The participants of our project group were Chen Chaoyong and Su Rongyu from Beijing, and Juliane Kiefner, Christine Moll-Murata, and Hans Ulrich Vogel from Tübingen. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Max Planck Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V., Germany.

Since the scope of the “Regulations and precedents on prices of materials” is very wide, the contained data extremely numerous, and some of the construction materials highly specialized, we first present here the “Regulations and precedents on prices of materials” of Gansu province. Databases of further provinces are in preparation. For some very specialized terms, we have preliminarily noted the phonetic transcription in Hanyu pinyin rather than the translation.

The Gansu edition of “Regulations and precedents on prices of materials” we have used is in the holdings of the Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is a manuscript of eight chapters and covers twelve prefectures and sub-prefectures. The editions we have so far collected and consulted, of Zhili, Yunnan, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Shandong, all have the same introductory memorial of the 20th day of the XIIth month of Qianlong 33 (27/01/1769) and other editorial material, and apart from very few variant characters, they are all equal. Chen Chaoyong has punctuated these texts for the readers’ easier reference. Please refer to the Gansu database for editorial materials.
