New Research Positions at the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences

 

Established in 1957, the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences (IHNS) is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive national institute specialized in the study of the history of science and technology (S&T). For over 60 years, the IHNS has been conducting in-depth monographic research on various research fields, including the history of mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geography, geology, biology, medicine and technology in pre-modern China, as well as history of the transmission of S&T between China and other countries, and has also conducted some groundbreaking research on the history of S&T in modern China. 

 

 As a comprehensive research institute combining the sciences and humanities, the IHNS focuses on the study of the history, nature, and routes and models of the development of science and technology. It is committed to understanding the complex interactions that exist between science, technology, society and culture, revealing trends in S&T, proposing influential strategic advice, and disseminating scientific ideas, so as to make unique contributions to building the national knowledge base and advisory structure. It pursues the highest levels of excellence in the study of history of Chinese S&T, as well as in related research fields, making it a distinctive, high-level and internationally influential institute, as well as a core center for nurturing talent in the history of S&T. 

 

The institute is offering positions for 10 Research Scholars and 10 Special Research Assistants (postdoctoral fellows) for the research of the history of S&T to scholars home and abroad. Relevant information is as following:

 

1Research directions:

History of S&T in China; Modern and contemporary history of S&T; Research on the global history of S&T.

 

2Job positions, requirements, and what we are offering:

Applicants of both positions must have PhD degrees, and major in history of S&T, history, library and archives management, history of Chinese philosophy, etc. Applicants should have high-quality research papers on history of S&T. A science and engineering background is preferred. Applicants for the direction of "History of S&T in China" are also required to have a solid background in ancient Chinese and ancient classical texts.

 

Applicants should have solid basic knowledge, the ability to conduct research independently, a strong professional dedication, and abide by scientific research ethics and academic norms. They should also be willing to cooperate with colleagues.

 

1) Research Scholars

Requirements:

Applicants should be under 35 (born after January 1, 1987) at the time of application, and the doctoral degrees should be obtained within 3 years. Fresh doctoral graduates are preferred. PhD degree holders who already have a job or post-doctoral candidates should be under the age of 40.

 

For Research Scholars, we are offering the standard salary of scholars at the IHNS. Excellent conditions of conducting academic research will be guaranteed, including office rooms shared by two, start-up funding for basic research, and the Li Yan Library. We are also offering a comprehensive social welfare package, rental apartments for young scholars, annual vacation during summer time, annual health examination, various welfare allowances, etc.

 

2) Special Research Assistants (postdoctoral fellows)

Applicants should be under 35 at the time of application, and the doctoral degrees should be obtained within 3 years. Fresh doctoral graduates are preferred.

  

For Special Research Assistants (postdoctoral fellows), we are offering a competitive remuneration package. It is generally equivalent to the average salary of associate professors of the institute. For those who are particularly excellent, or who have made outstanding contributions, or have achieved significant results, their remuneration may be further increased. The institute will help to apply the "Special Research Assistant Project" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the candidates who are finally selected will receive 600 thousand RMB for 2 years of funding.
