Abstract : Focusing on the Japanese master copies and the compilation of corresponding China's self-compiled middle schoolmathematical textbooks from the establishment of theRepublican China to the eve of the promulgation ofRenxu School System, this paper discusses the influence of Japan on China's middle school mathematical textbooks in the earlyRepublic of Chi-na.This study shows that the mainstream of introducing of China's middle school mathematical textbooks underwent a historictransformation from Europe and America to Japan by the wave of learning from Japan and the educational reform of the LateQing government during the 17 years after the end of the Sino-Japanese War.Although the wave of learning from Japan had sub-sided in the earlyRepublic of China,Japan still had a profound influence on China's middle school mathematicaltextbooks. However, most of China's self-compiled middle school mathematical textbooks in the earlyRepublic of China, which were based on Japanese master copies, were not completely confined to the master copies. The authors strove to breakthrough the master copies to some extent and compiled China's middle school mathematical textbooks for the new school sys-tem.At that time, the popularity of some China's self-compiled middle school mathematical textbooks based on Japanese mastercopies was not only their authors'achievements, but also the contribution of authors of master copies to modern China's middleschool education.
